What is SUDS (sustainable drainage systems)?

Sustainable drainage systems (SUDS) are surface water management techniques that use permeable surfaces, soakaways, and attenuation to reduce runoff from hard-standing areas instead of relying on traditional piped drainage alone.

SUDS refers to a set of drainage principles and physical features designed to manage surface water on paved areas like car parks, driveways, and commercial forecourts. Rather than channeling all rainwater into conventional pipe networks, SUDS work by allowing water to soak into the ground, storing it temporarily, or filtering it through specially selected materials.

The core components of SUDS include:

  • Permeable surfaces such as porous asphalt, concrete block paviors, or gravel that allow water to drain through rather than run off
  • Soakaways, which are underground pits filled with stone or gravel that capture and gradually absorb water
  • Attenuation features such as swales, retention ponds, or underground storage tanks that slow water flow and reduce peak runoff rates
  • Filter strips and planted areas that trap sediment and allow infiltration

SUDS matter because they reduce pressure on local drainage infrastructure, lower flood risk during heavy rainfall, improve water quality by filtering contaminants, and can recharge groundwater. Building regulations and local planning guidance in England now often require SUDS to be considered on new and resurfaced hard-standing areas. When installing new paving or managing drainage on commercial sites, paving contractors incorporate SUDS principles to meet these standards.
