What is sharp sand?

Sharp sand consists of coarser, angular grains that compact firmly when laid. It differs from soft sand (fine-grained) and kiln-dried sand in particle size and binding properties. In block paving work, a layer of sharp sand provides the base on which individual blocks sit, allowing minor adjustments during installation while offering stable support once compacted.

This sand is also mixed into mortars for pointing and bedding masonry, where its angular particles grip the binder (cement or lime) more effectively than rounded grains would. The angularity creates mechanical interlock rather than relying solely on adhesive strength.

For block paving contractors, choosing the right sand grade matters. Sharp sand accepts compaction better than soft sand and resists settlement under load.
