What is permeable paving?

Permeable paving is a surface material or installation method that allows water to drain through the paving itself or through gaps between units, reducing surface runoff.

Permeable paving refers to surfacing materials or systems designed to allow water to pass through the paving layer rather than running off into drains or flooding the surface. Water drains either through the material itself (as with porous asphalt or permeable concrete) or through joints between units (as with porous block paving with gravel-filled gaps or resin-bound surfaces).
