What is a fall or gradient in paving?

A fall (or gradient) is the intentional slope built into a paved surface to direct rainwater and standing water away from buildings and toward designated drainage areas.

In paving work, a fall refers to the deliberate slope or angle built into a finished surface. Rather than laying paving perfectly level, contractors introduce a gentle incline to prevent water from pooling on driveways, patios, car parks, and pathways. This slope guides water to run off toward the edges of the paved area and into drainage systems or soakaway points, keeping moisture away from building foundations and walls.

The slope is typically measured in degrees or as a ratio (often expressed as 1 in 40 or 1 in 60, meaning the surface drops 1 unit for every 40 or 60 units of horizontal distance). While the angle is gentle enough to be nearly invisible to the eye, it makes a significant difference in how long a paved surface lasts. Without adequate fall, water settles on the surface, seeps into base layers, and accelerates deterioration of materials and substructure.
